2015 AQHA Convention The 2015 AQHA Executive Committee,
Hall of Fame inductees, professionals of the year and more were named at this year’s convention.
The American Quarter Horse Association is an organization that works for its members. Each spring, AQHA holds an annual convention to review member-submitted rule changes, appoint new AQHA directors, induct new members into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and present year-end awards. The 2015 AQHA Convention was March 6-9 at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.
AQHA Executive Committee
The new AQHA Executive Committee was elected March 9. This five-person committee is responsible for implementing important decisions made by AQHA members through the board of directors. The 2015-16 AQHA Executive Committee is President Dr. Glenn Blodgett of Guthrie, Texas; First Vice President Sandy Arledge of Encinitas, California; Second Vice President Ralph Seekins of Fairbanks, Alaska; member Dr. Jim Heird of College Station, Texas; and member Stan Weaver of Big Sandy, Montana.
Hall of Fame Inductees
The 2015 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame inducted nine legends at convention: Thomas Bradbury of Byers, Colorado; AQHA Past President Jim Helzer of Arlington, Texas; the late Stanley Johnston of Miller, South Dakota; the late Ted Wells Jr. of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; the 1989 mare Corona Chick; the 1959 stallion Coy’s Bonanza; the 1930 stallion Plaudit; the 1979 stallion Smart Little Lena; and the 1962 Thoroughbred stallion Azure Te. In addition to the Hall of Fame inductions, Pat Hunt of Cannelton, Indiana, was presented the 2014 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award at the Hall of Fame Banquet. The Markel AQHA Cowtown Showdown,
Presented by the City of Fort Worth, showcased the American Quarter Horse and top professionals in the equine industry. The world’s greatest cowboys competed in cutting, reining, ranch horse and cow horse. The top winners from each competition were:
- Cutting – James Payne and Once In A Blu Boon
- Reining – Shawn Flarida and Smart Spook
- Ranch Horse – W.T. Waggoner Ranch, represented by Ben Baldus and Cruze Mode Cow Horse – Corey Cushing and Oh Cay N Short
The Markel AQHA Cowtown Showdown would not have been possible without Markel, the City of Fort Worth, Ford F-Series, Nutrena, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Western Horseman and Heritage Place.
Professionals of the Year
The 2014 Don Burt Professional’s Choice Professional Horseman of the Year, Professional’s Choice Horsewoman of the Year and Professional’s Choice Most Valuable Professional awards were presented at the awards banquet March 8. The awards were presented by AQHA Corporate Partner Professional’s Choice. Gary Roberts of Murrieta, California, was named the 2014 Don Burt Professional’s Choice Professional Horseman of the Year. Stephanie Lynn of Fall Creek, Wisconsin was named the 2014 Professional’s Choice Horsewoman of the Year. Holly Hover of Cave Creek, Arizona, was named the 2014 Most Valuable Professional. 2014 AQHA Year-End Winners
More than 110 high-point titles were awarded at the awards banquet. In addition to the leaders in each division, AQHA also named the 2014 year-end all-around award winners:

- Farnam All-Around Amateur Hayley Saul and Eyed Be In A Jam
- Farnam All-Around Junior Horse Mr Fritz Wood, owned by Lincoln Figueiredo
- Farnam All-around Senior Horse Smart Nu Shiner, owned by Joyce Tisdall
- Farnam World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse JRC Callas First, owned by Dana and Brian Stroud
